BBC Comic Relief 2023
Jump’s Senior Designers and dynamic-duo Callum O’Reilly and Sam Clarke donned their red noses and headed up to Manchester to help out on this year’s BBC Comic Relief.
Our primary mission for this year’s charity night was to help prepare the graphics that feed into the multiple studio screens. Although most of the work was done in advance, Callum and Sam took their laptops under their arms and set up a little graphics studio in the BBC lighting gallery. They were on-hand during rehearsals and at the live transmission to make any last minute amendments once the graphics had been seen in situ.
Colin Hopkins – Executive Producer Comic Relief 2023:
“This year Jump took the helm and ran our graphics in the lead up to and on Red Nose Day. It’s a very complex set up, but Jump took to the brief with ease and a ‘can do attitude’, often adapting and changing the graphics at a moment’s notice. A big thanks to Callum, Sam and everyone on the team for helping us raise a huge amount of money and put on a fantastic show”.
Callum O’Reilly – Senior Designer at Jump:
“The template is quite complex and feeds over twenty screens in the studio. Once the images are positioned on the lineup composite it is then broken down into four images which the studio screen operator imports into their system.
This impressive device is made from multiple large electronic boxes with screens and buttons galore and allows them to trigger any graphic on-demand at any point. Suffice to say they had huge-power and great responsibility considering the entire studio was screen-based. There were two other operators who could trigger even more graphics at any point in the show. All with the magic click of several hundred blinking buttons!”
The night raised nearly £32 million and featured sketches such as Baldrick from Blackadder reading CBeebies’ Bedtime Stories – and Dawn French brilliantly impersonating Claudia Winkleman in The Traitors.

COR – “After spending most of our time in the dark lighting gallery with several hundred screens and tiny flickering lights, it’s safe to say we both gained a couple of red eyes to go along with our Jony-Ive-designed red noses! A few drinks in the hotel bar after the show probably didn’t help either.”
Jump also created a few extra new graphics for The Best Of The Best Bits – which looked back over the last 35 years.
This year’s graphics for Comic Relief were originally designed by Treatment for the 2022 broadcast.
