BBC Mastermind: Specialist subject The Day Today
Last night’s episode of the classic quiz BBC Mastermind featured a specialist subject close to Jump’s heart.
Contestant Dom Tait, a Research Director, sat in the famous black chair to answer questions about The Day Today – which presenter Clive Myrie described as “The groundbreaking satire of television news devised by Chris Morris and Armando Iannucci.”
Before Jump was set up in 1996, the directors worked at ITN in their commercial design department and indeed it was here that they created all of the graphics for the hugely successful and hilariously funny series.
Imagine our surprise when one of the questions turned out to be on us!
WE WERE A QUESTION ON MASTERMIND!
Clive read out: “In 1995 the BAFTA for best Graphic Design was presented to two members of The Day Today team. Richard Norley and which other designer, in recognition of creating the look of the programme?”
Sadly, Dom got the answer wrong – but it was a close guess.
Russell Hilliard – Marketing Director at Jump:
“I nearly fell off my chair when I heard the question. I thought there might be one about Bomb Dog or the Collaterlie Sisters Finance graphics, but not actually about us. I do feel sorry for Dom though, that’s a toughy. I forget my name occasionally these days too. It was 30 years ago after all!”
The good news is, the wrong answer didn’t affect Dom’s final result and he went on to win the show. Good luck in the next round Dom.
