Jump x The Hustle

Supporting young people at the start of their creative journeys has always been a priority for Jump. That’s why, when we discovered the fantastic work Jenny Johnson was planning with her Community Interest Company, The Hustle, we were eager to lend our support.

Karon Hall – Operations Director at Jump:

“From the early days of Jump, we always used to offer work experience opportunities. We provided students with week-long placements where they would shadow our design and production teams. This experience allowed students to brainstorm ideas with the team and see how a job is planned and budgeted. If a shoot were coming up, I would reach out to students and offer them the opportunity to assist as a runner (paid!), helping out the cameraman, makeup artist, or production team, depending on the area they were most interested in.

After the pandemic, Jump transitioned to become a full-time, remote-working organisation, which has limited our ability to mentor young people. But we were still keen to look for opportunities to help.

Four years ago, we connected with Jenny while we were producing graphics for the Willow Foundation and The London Football Awards – another organisation we support at Jump. When Jenny launched The Hustle, we immediately hooked up with her again and have supported her incredible work with young people since day one. We’ve created their branding and made them animating sequences but we’re also discussing other ways Jump can get involved.”

The Hustle provides innovative and disruptive solutions for young people between the ages of 16 – 28 years of age.  They kick down barriers and offer educational and experiential bespoke programmes through the Creative Arts, Media, Tech, Sport Industries and Live Events.

KH: “Not everyone is academic; many thrive when given the right opportunity, especially those seeking a creative path. Experience counts for a lot in this industry.

My own journey into the industry began when I attended a youth club at 14, where one of the youth workers, who worked at Thames Television, encouraged us to learn about the industry by making short films. Unfortunately, under the previous government, funding cuts reduced youth club budgets by 70%, so many doors of opportunity have been closed.

In the past, my fellow director Russell Hilliard has attended career days at senior schools, sharing his journey into television graphics. He provided valuable insights into the animation and broadcast industry, giving students a taste of what it’s like to start as a runner and work your way up to becoming a company director, along with the ultimate accolade of winning a BAFTA.

I’m delighted we have given young people their first look into the industry. One of our first placements is now a producer on Match of the Day, while another is a camera assistant working his way up to a Director of Photography on shows such as Bake Off and Taskmaster.”

And now Jump is proud to be helping Jenny and The Hustle.

Jenny Johnson – Founder of The Hustle:

“Having worked with Jump on multiple projects they never cease to amaze me. Jump is a ‘one of a kind’ company with exceptional skills and creativity. Anything is possible and always sprinkled with a bit of magic that takes your breath away. A magnificent team who are always on time. On point. And shoot for the stars.

Thank you for everything you do.”
