Jump’s Guest Lecture with Teesside University

Jump was recently contacted by Penny Holton Craig at Teesside University to ask if we could possibly give a guest lecture to the students on their motion graphics module.

Russell Hilliard – Marketing Director at Jump:

“When Penny’s message popped up in my LinkedIn Inbox – I knew we would definitely want to help out. It was very flattering to be asked to give a lecture. Although I did get a tad nervous when she mentioned they had already been working with Industrial Light and Magic. No pressure then!

We used to work with Penny when she was an expert 3D animator at facilities companies like Touch Animation and Skaramoosh. This was actually before the days of Jump and back when we were still at ITN.

Penny created 3D graphics for some of our most early successful TV title sequences –  like The Day Today, Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge and even Clive James on TV.

Our lovely Art Director Harry Handyside joined me for the presentation which was held over a Zoom call. It was great having Harry there as he is particularly across all of the latest animation software and techniques the Jump team use.

The themes of the lecture included:

Mine and Harry’s education and career background.

The history of Jump and how it all started.

The type of work we do.

What it’s like to work at Jump now.

And finally some general advice and tips about working in the industry.

I hope the talk was useful and enjoyable to all the students. It’s actually cool to take a moment to retrace the history of the company and see how far we’ve all come since the old Quantel days.”

Penny Holton Craig – Principal Lecturer at Teesside University:

“Thank you so much. You gave the students a great insight into Jump. How you work, and some fantastic tips on working with clients.”

Kaelynn Faulkner – Student at Teesside University:

“I found the insight into how the company operates to be very interesting as I would have originally assumed that they would work in an office rather than remotely.

I also liked hearing about the bi-monthly hangout times with the staff to help with team-bonding and getting out of the house instead of working at your home computer all day.

Hearing how they started out was very inspiring and helpful.”

We wish all the students the very best of luck with their course.

Supporting young people at the start of their creative journeys has always been a priority for Jump which is why we work with Community Interest Company, The Hustle.
